These days, there are hundreds of travel rewards credit cards. With so many cards to choose from, it’s hard to know which ones are good for travel and which ones aren’t worth your time.
It can be especially confusing trying to navigate all the perks, loyalty programs, benefits, offers, arcane rules and hidden fees of credit cards.

I’m not interested in cashback cards because I travel so often that points – not cashback – are worth more to me.

The most common travel credit cards accepted offer between 40,000 to 60,000 points, although sometimes they can be as high as 100,000. That’s why the card is great – you get an instant balance of thousands of points for a small transaction.

If you’re not sure you’ll be able to make the minimum threshold for a welcome gift, ask around to see if any friends or family are planning to buy something big. If they will let you put it on your card (and charge you money) you can beat the minimum spend threshold to get your welcome points.
2. Added spending style – Most credit cards offer one item for every dollar spent. However, a good credit card will give you points when you shop with merchants, or, if it’s a branded credit card, with the same type. This will help you earn points faster.
I don’t want one dollar to be worth just one point. I want to be able to earn two or three points every time I spend a dollar.

For example, with card_name you earn 3x points on travel and dining at hotels, card_name gives you 5x points on business expenses, and the American Express® Gold Card gives 3x points on flights (when you book directly or at amextravel.com). I can earn points when I book with the company card at that company (ie Delta flights with a Delta card).
That’s what you want. Never accept one point per dollar spent. Look for at least two. (Some cards offer up to 6 points per dollar spent.)
3. Minimum Spending – Unfortunately, in order to get the maximum cashback these cards offer, there is usually a minimum spending requirement. While there are ways to boost your spending temporarily, it’s best to get the money through a daily budget. I am applying for a card with a small budget requirement of $1,000–3,000 USD in three to six months.

Some cards only require you to make one purchase in order to be accepted (these are my favorite types of accepted cards).
While you shouldn’t avoid minimum spend cards as they have great rewards, it’s a good idea to start small because you don’t want to be stuck with too many cards that you can’t spend the minimum amount on. Once you get the card, you cannot apply for the card. Only apply for the card you earn the minimum amount to qualify for the welcome bonus.
Managing your ability to meet the minimum spending requirement is key because if you spend more than you do just to get these points, the points are no longer zero. Spend only what you used to and not a penny more.
